Slice of the Times

How hip is sushi? So hip that the New York Times is promoting its latest Style issue of the New York Times Magazine with a sushi roll that replicates the magazine’s “T” logo with vegetables and rice.

My question is whether this sushi roll was really rolled. I suspect that this single slice was assembled by hand. I’m skeptical that any sushi chef, no matter how talented, could have replicated this elegant font inside an actual roll.

But maybe I’m wrong. There’s a scene in my book The Zen of Fish in which one of the sushi students—an amateur—creates a geometrically perfect, multicolored sushi “roll”—he actually puts it together like a regular roll—that results in slices shaped like rectangular dominoes. Here’s a photo of it. As you’ll know if you’ve read the book, the student who created this “domino roll” was an undercover former Japanese pop idol hiding out in L.A. and learning sushi to escape his celebrity status back in Japan.
